Mysteries and Myth Making
In Jaguarman (translated from Dutch by John Eyck, Hope Road), Raoul de Jong, following the instructions of an elderly Creole medicine woman and in the wake of meeting his father, travels to Suriname to get to know this part of his heritage, the history of the country and how it is intertwined with the colonial history of the Netherlands. He searches for his mythical African ancestor, a sorcerer and jaguar. Tendai Huchu, in his mystery Edinburgh Night Series (Tor), expertly blends elements of Zimbabwean and Scottish culture drawing on myths, the occult and fantasy.
