Lives in Retrospect: Stories from Columbia and Haiti
Both Juan Gabriel Vásquez and Dimitry Elias Léger look retrospectively at the lives of real people, placed within their political and social background. Vásquez’s The Retrospective (translated from Spanish by Anne McLean, MacLehose Press) explores the life story of Colombian film director Sergio Cabrera, and Léger’s Death of a Soccer God (MCD) looks at the life of a Haitian footballing hero at the moment he is facing a firing squad.
