Clare O’Dea

Irlandaise d’origine et suisse naturalisée, Clare O’Dea vit à Fribourg depuis 2003 et prend la Suisse comme sujet dans ses romans, en mettant l’accent sur les voix marginalisées. Elle a travaillé comme journaliste pendant dix ans à la SRG SSR et elle parle cinq langues, y compris le français et l’allemand. Dans son premier roman, Le jour où les hommes ont dit non (Voting Day), dont l’action se déroule en févier 1959, le jour où les hommes suisses ont rejeté l’octroi du droit de vote aux femmes, Clare O’Dea a placé les femmes au cœur de son récit. Dans son deuxième roman, Before the Leaves Fall (2025), qui aborde la question du suicide assisté, ce sont les personnes âgées qui sont les protagonists.

Originally from Ireland and a naturalised Swiss citizen, Clare O’Dea has lived in Fribourg since 2003 and features Switzerland in her fiction and non fiction, with a focus on marginalised voices. She worked as a journalist for ten years at the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation, SRG SSR, and speaks five languages, including French and German. In her first novel, Voting Day (Le jour où les hommes ont dit non), set in 1959 on the day Swiss men voted ‘no’ to granting women the vote, Clare O’Dea placed women at the heart of the narrative. In her second novel, Before the Leaves Fall, which addresses the issue of assisted suicide, elderly characters take centre stage.
